What Drives Us
The mission of The Olde Towne Curb Market is to promote agritourism: to provide a venue for area farmers to directly market their products to the consumer and to educate consumers about the nutritional benefits of farm raised produce and related products.
Market History
Movement to initiate a farmers’ market in Isle of Wight County began in the early spring of 2003. The market committee was comprised of members of the Isle of Wight-Smithfield-Windsor Chamber of Commerce, representatives from local governments, including the Town of Smithfield and the County of Isle of Wight, local business owners, and interested citizens. The initial goal was to have a 10-week market with at least 10 growers/producers and attract 250 customers at each market. The market has continued to grow over the last 5 years with the 2007 market hosting over 30 vendors, crowds in excess of 600 shoppers at each of the 18 markets. Additionally, Sentara Obici joined the market in 2006 as a corporate sponsor, enhancing the market with a weekly wellness booth designed to help educate consumers about healthy lifestyles. This year, 2008, the Smithfield & Isle of Wight County Tourism Office took over management of the market and pledges to continue this outstanding tradition.
